2020 ICTM Scholarship Recipients

Abigail (Abby) Pyle

Taylor University

Math Education Major

“I had the privilege of learning under the best math teacher I have ever known (my senior year of high school). She inspired me like none other to pursue math, not just because I was good at it but because it was enjoyable! She brought life and excitement to all her students; and she taught me that, while everyone might not love math, everyone can enjoy math if it is taught right!”

“I will feel like I will have succeeded if my students walk away from my classes with a practical understanding of math and its relevance to their lives as well as a new-found enjoyment for learning the complexities of this very important and amazing subject!”

Andrew Friesen

Taylor University

Math Education Major

“In my Perspectives on Diversity class I decided I want to work at a disadvantaged, low-income school. Teachers have the power to flip the script on the lives of students. I want to be a part of raising a generation that believes in themselves because if children believe in themselves then they will feel empowered to chase their dreams. That’s why I want to be a teacher. I want to change the world by changing a child’s world.”

“If I want my students to believe in themselves, then I need to build their self-efficacy by helping them meet challenging goals.  I will provide hands-on, collaborative, exploratory activities to engage students not only because they are fun, but because they make real-world connections.  I want to create a classroom culture that sees failure as an opportunity to learn and not as a lack of competency. I will encourage students to respectfully critique the work of other students, and to build mathematical arguments and reasoning.”

Hannah Brubaker

Manchester University

Secondary Math Education Major

“Math is everywhere you look and you use it every day. I have always had a passion for kids. My goal is to become a middle school math teacher because middle schoolers are at the age where they start feeling insecure about who they are. I want my students to believe they can achieve anything they set their minds to. I chose to teach mathematics because I want to make a difference in the lives of our youth.”

“In my classroom, students will have a safe environment where they are encouraged to ask questions. My students will participate in hands-on learning.”
