Conference Strands

• STEM: Math in Science and Science in Math. Immersing students in a strong STEM curriculum can provide powerful motivation and meaning for students, but launching  a full on STEM curriculum from scratch can be a daunting task. Instead of taking a big leap into STEM, some teachers try a few small steps by incorporating activities that blend the two topics in practical and meaningful ways. After all, math and science careers have a basis in the basics:  the engineering process, gathering data, evaluation, problem solving and more.  Proposals for this strand can include sessions sharing approaches where the curriculum takes a big leap into STEM as well as sessions where the presenters were just taking initial steps in that direction. The goal is to share experiences where STEM helped students see the connections and find doors to the future swinging open..
  
• Learning How To School Again. Years ago, students sat in rows and listened to lectures.  Teachers used overhead projectors, transparencies, chalkboards, and scantron. Some of those tools are still around, but math and science teachers continue to add to their toolbox.  Recently we had to rethink many aspects of education, including  assessments,  concept mastery,  fluency, class structure, and  higher order thinking. We also added many tools to our daily virtual and hybrid teaching.  How do we move forward in the classroom while students and teachers both learn how to  school again? Sessions in this strand will share ideas and experiences about meeting today’s challenges in the classroom as we prepare students to be successful tomorrow.All teachers will improve STEM instruction by 2025 according to the IDOE 6 Year STEM Strategic Plan. This strand will showcase classroom tested STEM, STEAM, and STREAM activities and resources to support students’ learning.
  
• Teacher Education. New challenges require new approaches to teacher preparation. Sessions for this strand include proposals about work with teacher candidates or inservice teachers, the development of teacher educators, professional development efforts, collaborations and partnerships, and all aspects of teacher education in mathematics, science or STEM subjects.
  
• For the Love and Joy of Math and Science. Sometimes, students complete assignments for a grade, or because they don’t want to get grounded. Other times, they do it because they absolutely love it. Whether it’s the beauty of fractals, the coolness of constructions, the awe of a rocket launch, the discovery of biomes, or the desire to protect our environment, math and science are full of engaging, student-centered topics that can create passion for the content. These sessions should focus on activities, experiments, or projects that your students look forward to completing every year, activities that bring joy and passion to the classroom.
  
• Access, Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment. STEM is like a golden ticket.  Not only does it provide students with exciting, real world connections to science and math, but STEM  also offers a vision of possibilities for college and careers. Not only does STEM education benefit our students, it also benefits every citizen utilizing new technologies, medicines, and more that result from adults who were involved in STEM as students. This is why diversity and inclusion matter.  Each and every student deserves access to technical literacy, meaningful research, and their own dream of the future. These sessions offer insight on how to ensure equity, access, and empowerment to each and every student, encouraging students to see their backgrounds and individuality as an asset to their schools and community.

Speaker Categories

We welcome a diverse set of speakers with the goal of enriching the experience of conference attendees. Proposals should focus on the presenters' work and not offer any endorsements to specific products or services available on the market or for a fee. Commercial organizations need to register as an exhibitor. Speakers can only be in a maximum of two proposals. Commercial organizations, nonprofit organizations, or educational agencies, can submit a maximum of two proposals. You will be asked to select one of the following speaker categories for each proposal. 

• Inservice/Retired Teacher/Educator
• Preservice Teacher
• Nonprofit Organization/Government Agency
• Exhibitor
• Math/Science Consultant

Proposal Information

The Program Committee will make decisions about acceptance for all proposed sessions. You will be asked to provide the following information:

• Presentation title (up to 15 words).
  
• Presentation description for program (up to 40 words).
  
• Topics from the list above to be addressed.
  
• Presentation information. Providing some detail about the content of your session, how it addresses the conference theme and the strands selected, and how you plan to engage the audience (up to 100 words).
• Co-presenters information. List of co-presenters, their emails, their titles, and their institutional affiliation.
• Audience for your presentation
• Presenter biography (up to 100 words).
